Tracing previous owners

I recently managed to trace the history of my 1991 Grand Wagoneer, which was tricky because it's lived in so many places. Sold new in the US, moved to the Netherlands in 1993, briefly lived in Poland, then onto Austria where I bought it and had it shipped to the UK.

I discovered that it was sold new by Manhattan Jeep Eagle in NYC, but that's all the info I can really find from its time in the US.

Is there any way to find out who the original owner was? I've run a CarFax, but that doesn't show that information.

Typically no, those types of records are private, and DMV won't release them.

Wow! You've got a bona-fide world traveller there - a Jeep that's literally been around the world. Very cool! Possible that all those moves were with one person. Military or business maybe?
I'd say the best chance would be if that dealership in NYC is still around, see if they have records and if they'd tell you. You probably thought of that already though...
Did the person you bought it from in Austria have any info on the previous owner before them?

That's a shame, I figured it would probably be the case though

Thanks, it has certainly traveled quite a bit! Unfortunately not with one owner, by my latest estimations I think it has actually had about 10.

I've tried following up with the previous owners but haven't gotten anywhere at all.
I've also been in touch with the NYC dealership. They were very kind and are going to send me a license plate frame, but unfortunately don't seem to have records that far back.

You can try contacting the NY DMV.

In CA you can do a vehicle record search that will tell you previous owners, accidents, etc.
Have to fill out some forms, specify what you want, send them $$$ and wait.
It must be done via mail, and the forms have to be filled out correctly.
