Why are the GW hood ornaments spring loaded?

Why the spring on hood ornaments? Why arent they mounted solid? I broke mine yesterday, and I found that it is held on by a spring and VERY small piece of weak metal that the spring goes thru. I put out a call on another post for a replacement, but iIm thinking if drilling it and mounting it solid. Why wont this work?

Spring loaded to prevent damage to pedestrians you may hit. It also prevents breakage in case something or someone accidentally hits it. Mounting it solid shouldn't be an issue.

So they will bend over and twist a little going though the car wash.

Also the spring hole is used so you can hang it from that big GOLD chain around your neck.
