    Manually put in 4X4?

I have a 1984 Jeep J-10 and their is a vacuum leak so 4x4 wont engage is their a way to put it in by hand from up under the truck? Or is their a posi-lok system for this model, could i do a homemade job on one or something?
    Thanks for the help

Why not just fix the vacuum leak?

You could take out the vacuum diaphram and "ethnically engineer" a cable shift that could do the trick. That would take a long time and involve some significant work sourcing the parts and building up everything.

Or you can spend an hour replacing vacuum lines.

ten feet of vacuum hoseis all you need to fix this. I garontee the steel lines running under the exhaust manifold have rotted.

It has the vacuum disconnect axle and from what I have read that are a pice! And Im thinking about swapping it for a better axle I look and the reason the 4x4 won't engauge is because the vacuum mogle it's self is clogged and I'm wondering if I could just clean it out and it would work? I also read on doing a soild shaft swap to make it full time 4x4 or u could open the case up and move the pin to lock it in 4x4 and seeing how it drove before I just swapped out the axle. If I did swap out the axle what type should I get? The Cherokee has a Dana 30 would that fit mine? Or would it be better to just find a wqgonner 44 that would bolt right up and how hard that would be to come across don't wanna drop a ton of money to one

If you just wanna put it in 4x4 for now, you can climb under there with it in Neutral and just move the piece by hand

Fix it the right way with some vacuum tubing. Much easier.

And what do you mean by "vacuum mogle"?? Please refer to the parts by their actual names so we can all understand what you're talking about.

The wagoneer front axle will be too narrow for a J Truck.

yeah even if the axle was physically wide enough a dana 30 is way to small for a Full size jeep, there not even that great in a baby jeep. Easiest thing to do would be fix what you got, but if your serious about swapping axle you want a donor dana 44 without the vacuum crap from another full size jeep.

My bad axle shift motor on the front axle is clogged. And what pice could I just move by hand to put in 4x4? I'm looking for A new axle shift motor but have only found them for dodge and their like 100 bux and I'm not sure that a new one would fix it.

Welcome to the land of empty pockets and unfinished projects....

BJ's Offroad might have them. Also check the for sale section on the first page. You might find what your looking for.

Welcome from Wahoo,Nebraska! You've got a pretty decent start to the addiction, all you gat to do is fix it!If you plan on changing out the front diffy, you'll need an '80 or newer J10 Dana 44 front diffy.I don't know which ones had the disconnect axles,my '81 J10 doesn't have it.You might unbolt the vacuum shift motor, see if the shaft is frozen up.If you can move it,maybe the plastic straw on a can of aerosol brake clean inserted in the hose fitting would blast it out?

Posi Lok make one for a Dodge Ram with a Dana 44. I wonder if that would work?
