    SETTING UP A DANA 44

Guys what is a good starting point for a shim thickness for a pinion on a
Dana 44? Also does the Pinion Depth gauge made by RACTECH work on our Dana 44 fronts? Their website says part number 10011 fits but the detail says only 2007 and newer

      DANA 44

I am working with a blank housing so I have no idea what the shim was that came out, which is why I am just looking for a starting point

Pose to be a number on the face of the gear that's the dimension from the ring center. There's a tool for this that I thought I saw for $100ish in a Jegs or Summit catalog. Much more for a big name brand.

Maybe check Amazon. Could maybe cobble something together. Haven't decided if I'll buy it or rig up somethin when I need it.

Trying to do it without the pinion depth correct to start means a lot of back and forth since that can affect backlash too. So you guess at the pinion depth, set the ring by backlash, check the pattern, oops pinions off, take it all apart, reshim the pinion, set the backlash, check the pattern, reshim the pinion.....

The pinion tool gets that right to start with and cuts the trial and error way back.

          DANA 44

RACTECH makes an inexpensive tool that works well. I was just trying to get close before I start fitting. The RACTECH tool is like a GO NO GO gauge.

Wasn't that his initial question, clarified in his second post?

I'd like to know if it saves me buying the tooling or several hours of trial and error.

And if I'm wrong about that I'd like to know that also.

                PINION DEPTH

No I have done the before. I was just asking for a starting point in reference to pinion shims to save me a few steps. A great tool made by Ractech part number 10011 is a go-no-go gauge that is inexpensive and will help you set the proper pinion depth. Once that is done I have borrowed a set of " trial bearings" from Bob Gibson which will allow me to set the backlash without having to press the bearings on and off multiple times.

Thank you for the recommendation on using about .035 shim stack as a starting point.

Want a spare axle to try this on?
Bought this thinking it was from a 77 Cherokee. It's not, so I took the carrier and pinion out to fix my axle. Otherwise, the rest of it is in very good shape. All the hardware is there. Want parts from it? Cheap! Tell me what you want. I'll send you pictures. Brakes are complete, Axle shafts look pretty good. Drums look
