I'm new to the FSJ boards, and have a few questions on an engine/transmission swap for my '89 Grand Wagoneer.

This Jeep is going to be going on its third engine. The original 360 consumed itself when (I'm assuming) the oil pump took a dump at ~60 MPH. I'm not sure what exactly happened to it, but it involved a loud bang, no oil pressure, and a cracked camshaft, crankshaft, and trans case (long story). The second engine, a 360 from a J-truck (unknown year and mileage) developed a cracked cylinder somewhere in West Virginia, en-route home from Ohio to PA, with my '83 Rampage on a tow dolly behind me. Needless to say, I was able to limp it home the rest of the way, stopping every 5-10 minutes to refill the rad with water

My mechanic finally got around to checking out the engine (at the time I thought it was a blown head gasket), and informed me that not only is the #5 cylinder cracked, but the cam bearings are toast, the cam is scored, and the crank bearings are shot. The bearings and cam could've been fixable, but I'm not taking any with a cracked block.

Sooo... Seeing as how I paid about $1500 for the second 360/727 combo, I don't feel like taking the chances on another junkyard engine that's a bit hard to find parts for.

I'd like to swap in a Mopar 360 or 318, with a 727 or 904 Chrysler tranny. I've found engine mount adapters through Novak Conversions, but can't find any information on tranny mounts, or adapting the Chrysler transmission to the NP-229 transfer case.

I've read a bit about swapping the tailshafts, but I believe all those articles were for using manual trannies.

I've also read articles about using GM trannies, with adapters to the Mopar engine, and then more adapters to the NP-229 transfer case... No offense, but I'm not trying to do what AMC did, and use parts from every manufacturer I'm at least trying to keep the drivetrain from the same manufacturer, and being a Mopar fan, well, that's why I picked the 318/360.

As of right now, I'm not really looking for performance - just something that will move the Jeep from point A to point B, and be able to tow (another vehicle, at the most more than likely).

I'm just looking for different options mostly right now - I'm not even sure if I'll go through with the swap, due to the condition of the body. The frame is in surprizingly good shape for an FSJ (even around the gas tank - very little rust at all), unfortunately, the body is pretty much falling off of that solid frame

I believe you need the case from a Mopar 727 and the guts from your AMC 727. The only differences are the flex plate, convertor, and the bell pattern cast into the 727 case.

This is all IIRC - use search and I'm sure this has been covered before.

If you go with a whole mopar drivetrain the dodge 727 should bolt up to to your tcase and it should be very similar in length. From what I remember the dodge trucks have 23 spline outputs just like the jeeps.

There is a guy out here selling a complete drivetrain from a 95 1/2 ton ram complete with wiring harness, computer, all accessories for $500.
He was going to use it in his yj but decided not to.
So I am seriously researching this swap for my waggy.

Yup just use the Mopar engine and trans, it will bolt to your T-Case in your 89

Ah. Okay. Cool

I posted this same thing on the Allpar boards, and got replies more along the lines of "it will more effort than it's worth and cheaper to put another AMC 360 in." I know I can locally get an engine and tranny from a Dodge truck for $500 or less, and the mount kit from Novak is $109.

Knowing that the Dodge tranny will bolt right to the transfer case is good Is there any specific years that I should be looking for? I'm also assuming that it has to be from a 4WD truck?

Last question (for now...) Will the tranny mount/crossmember work with the Dodge tranny, or would I have to custom fabricate something out of angle iron? Although, on the Novak site, it says that the mount points are to be welded to the inside of the framerail, so I guess that would determine where the tranny mount would line up, right? If the fan's ends up too close to the rad, I'd just keep the fan off and put an electric one on...
