Good call, if you've never set one up before. Two hours is a good deal, well worth it.
The cleaning you gave it for sure got all the grenade fragments out.

You are getting "wiser" Marc. When it's done, you can bolt it on and just worry about some other part instead of this one.

Thank you, gentlemen.
****************************
4 hours of labor, 1 rebuild kit, $630, and I have my axle back. It has .005" back lash and 28in pounds of yoke preload. My wife only yelled for 8 minutes when I told her how much it cost, so that's good. No new spare tire and I am now on the hunt for used tires since I spent $200 of my tire money of fixing my axle.

I painted it and hope to install it tonight. I used high gloss black so when it get's oily/grimey in the future, gloss black is easier to clean than flat black.

When it was painted I was able to see the build date Dana part number. It's pretty faint and I could not get a good picture of it.
according to my TSM and my build date, the axle was built on Dec 8, 1978, during the first shift on the 3rd assembly line. That maps pretty close to my truck's assembly date so this should be the original axle housing. Looking forward to getting this in and driving my truck for the first time in months.

Looks good! A lot a work.
New tires will not do you any good without an axle to put them on.
If you need to budget them, just but two at a time.
But you may need to work on some other project for her to smooth things over with your wife.

Facts right there. All of it. For now, if I get my turd out of the garage and her car goes back in, that will smooth things over for a while.

It's in. Drama free. I used gasket maker instead of a gasket this time, though, and it needed 24 hours to dry before I added lube.

Tonight I am pretty busy but hopefully tomorrow, after work, I will sauce it up, do another unrelated repair, then pull it out of slumber and do a couple burnouts to make sure it works.
