I just used standard line from the part store, but I've done it twice now without removing the tank. When the line failed on my '88, I pulled the one I made for the '89 and moved it over.
I was able to snake it in into approximately the original location. I don't remember the exact details - it was not easy, but it was a lot easier than removing the tank. I used at least two main pieces of line spliced together. I believe I fed the rear piece in from along the driver's side frame rail after putting a rubber cap over the end to protect it. And of course you should get a decent tubing bender from the parts store.
Funny, I just did one on my Ranger pick-up today!
