Ring gear bolt tourque
Ok, so i installed my aussie locker this weekend, and went to tourque the ring gear bolts back down and i went to 50 ft/lbs first thinking that was it. Went throught the manual and found a refernce to 108ft/lbs so i started tourquing and broke off a bolt. this is a d44 front by the way. So, someone tell me, what should i tourque to??

A google search brings a few sites and they all listed 100 FT-LBS.
I dont know for sure, but are you even supposed to re use the ring gear bolts? You might not. But like I said, I'm not sure.

I don't think you are supposed to resure ring gear bolts but I always have anyways. I've always just gone for "really tight" instead of "tight". I don't own a torque wrench.

yeah, that shouldn't have snapped. Yeah, it's a pain but better to find it now then later
You are supposed to use new bolts everytime but I have heard of using the old ones without much issue.

This made me go and look at the install instructions for my Lock-right... it only says "install the ring gear now and torque the bolts". Hmmmmmmm... might need to look into this a little more closely before I install it.

You only have to remove the ring gear if its too thick to get the cross pin out. If the cross pin will slide past the gear, then you dont even have to pull the carrier.

As far as I know though you will have pull the ring gear on all D44s to get the cross shaft out. Does anyone know if you have to on the amc 20 or D60?

Supposedly, on some 44s you can manage it without taking out the ring gear IF you can get the roll pin out and IF the ring is small enough to get the cross pin out. It's supposed to depend on the gearing. High gears you maybe can; low gears you can't. My 3.54s are right at the cutoff, but I'm expecting to have to take the carrier out.

I've installed at least a dozen of them after removing the carrier and then reused the ring gear bolts. Never had a problem, yet.

I put mine on without a torque wrench but I am sure it was no where NEAR 100ft/lbs... It did not take anything like that to get them OFF (as it it was pretty damm easy) and I figured since it had gone 200K miles like that with no bolts coming out (hell the thing looked pretty much new...) it was probably ok to tighten them to about what it took to get them off (I am guessing about 40ft/lbs.. if that)
