From ratty to Rattle can!

got sick of looking at the worn sun dried vinyl crap and decided it was time. the hardest part was removing the vinyl the rest was cake.
hope you all like.

I chose the Khaki flat for the main color and Flat black for the trim. I need to redo the trim I guess I didn't sand good enough because it is flaking a little. over all I am extremely happy with the looks and everyone that see's it compliments it

old pics when I first got it:

looks pretty dog gone good!!

I like the black on all the trim bumper and door handles. I wonder if one could get clear coat in a rattle can too to try and protect it form. flying rocks and salt. then youd only have to mask off the windows.

Surprisingly .... I think it looks pretty darn nice.

How much rattle can does a FSJ take anyway?

I used the khaki too. You cant wash dirt or oils off of it, so just keep a few cans around for touch up when it gets dirty.

Sand your metal good for the black..and use a self-etching primer. Otherwise for high traffic items, powder coating is good..and a lot of neat color options now.

Good work!
I had a '75 Chevy K-20 4x4 that I did the etching primer - "rust brown" all over. it looked as good as yours does - I liked it so much I kept it for four years before I sold it.

The new owner likes it so much I still see him driving it with the primer.

Good job, I like the sand color.

What techniques did you use to remove the old vinyl?

Looks great! just ruff up that trim that's flaking then re-rattle.. I'm a huge fan of the rattle can, ace safety green is my friend.
I've been tempted to do my bright work also.. I like the way it looks on yours.. especially the door handles, and the tail light trim.

G_$,
I used about 12 tan and 4 black. cost about 80 ish? no more than 100 dollars.

Thanks for all the comments guys! and the advice. I am going to get the self etching primer and do the trim again.

get the vinyl off was such A pain. I wouldn't painted over it but it looks all cracked with the paint on it. I did about A 1/4 of the removal with an electric heat gun and scraper. after that taking way to long I went and got A gallon of the aircraft paint remover gel kind and went at it with that. I just brushed the gel on with A paint brush waited A little and went on with A scraper. that was so much easier.
