Cupholders IN a stock GW armrest

I've had the idea to insert cup holders IN TO the back of my (spare) stock GW center armrest.

Has anybody tried this? or ...

Has anybody found a suitable cup holder that could be fabricated in to the arnmrest cushion. I have got some ideas, but nothing perfect just yet.

One idea would be to use some wood grain vinyl to cover a backer board that would attach to the armrest. I'd then use boat/poker table inserts and attach them to the backer board. Could even add a small tray as well.

Thoughts?

Somebody on here made a sweet holder setup for the armrest, I'll have to see if I can find the thread.

Ahh yes.. sadly I sold that GW a while back. Loved the cupholder install I did on it though. Looks like I might have moved or deleted the original pictures of the armrest though.... let me see if I can find some pics and relink them.

Here is the concept in a modeling program.. then 3 shots of the finished product.

Pretty cool, but what about mounting (somehow) the wood frame INTO the surface of the armrest? That is what I am considering.

If you haven't already taken it apart to look at it, the armrest is simply a metal plate, with foam on both top and bottom and then covered in leather. I see no reason why you couldn't mount something to the metal plate, and then trim the foam and leather around the cupholder.

My solution puts the drinks farther forward so as not to take away any of the armrest surface, but that's just personnal preference.
