Anybody running adjustable air shocks?

I used to run these on my Z71 and liked the solution - run them low when no-load in the bed for ride, and increase the pressure when towing/hauling...I can't see why they wouldn't be just as beneficial on the J10...

Anyone running them now? Thoughts?

That is how I did a poor man lift on my first Waggy back in the 80s. I gained about 2.5" lift when I wanted it. I had 120 psi rated shocks on the front and 150 psi rated on the back and ran them 30-40 psi in town and 100 in the front and 130 in the back to get lift for the beach. They worked great for what I used the Jeep for.

yeah that was in the back of my mind too...I'm throwing a set of BJ's shackles on the front and probably an AAL too (springs are pretty sprung on the front) and figured that if both were there I might be just a bit lopsided. I could block the rear and I might still, but I'm going to need the occasional towing gain that you can get from the air shocks....and if it lifts her an inch or so, hey even better!

I used Gabriel for the front with exposed air bag because the type with the metal tube over the air bag would not clear the shock tower.

How do the shock mounts take the extra load?

When I went fishing on Padre Island, I would load 1 to 3 dogs, enough camp gear for a couple days for 1 or 2 people, lots of fishing gear, 15' kayak on top, extra gas, parts, fluids, etc then air up. They took the load and beach terrain just fine.

I wouldn't expect any trouble, as long as everything's in good shape/no cancer/etc...

My 84 had them in the rear when I bought it 11 1/2 years ago. Replaced them with Gabriels (I think, could be Monroe) about 5-6 years ago. Just the last 6 months I've been losing air a little, guy at the tire store said the shocks usually don't go bad, the air lines get cracked, etc. I need to get a set and install them and see if it fixes the problem.

I really like the flexibility. Usually run around 70 lbs (got sag in the rear and it keeps it level), but when I have to haul something heavy (firewood, shrubs, etc) I air them up to about 120 lbs. The sticker says the limit is 250 lbs! Never tried that, only a couple compressors in town can get them up to 120.

nitrogen??

I just had my new tires filled with nitrogen---less prone to leakage--supposedly. I was airing up all the time with the old ones and the gas stations started charging for air-ups as a profit center I figured it cant hurt anything and it was only 5$/tire and might actually save some $ in the long run over the "fuel saving".

now I'm wondering about having them let the air out of the air shocks and filling the shock systems with NI too to help avoid any leakage. think it'd work???

Please god don't use air shocks, the shock mounts are not designed to hold the weight of the vehicle, if you need some assist in the rear use a air bag seup that goes between the top of the axle and the frame, air shock are nothing but trouble. and the nitrogen thing is a scam. the air around you is already 78% nitrogen , so a little more isn't gonna make that much differance.

I actually considered this...where would you find a set for our rigs? All the websites I use don't list our rigs as an option...or would you just custom fit one?

Not disputing your claims, but only going on my experience, my rig is 25 years old, and has ~ 268,000 miles. Has had air shocks for at least 11 1/2 years and at least 177,000 miles. Not had a problem yet with the shock mounts, though saying that, I would expect that to be the next thing I deal with.
Could have something to do with salt on the roads I suppose, mine's been in Oregon all it's life.

PO put some on My 87 J20, not sure if the were for that application or not, looks like some of the brackets may have been fabed. If I don't get you any pics maybe you can get a look at them when you're up for the next appt. at Mayo.
