Need ring and pinion setup help!
So we are kinda in a bind. My brother in law has a 01 ram 2500 4x4 diesel. It has the stock D70U rear axle. One day I noticed a slight oilyness on the bottom of the diff, didnt think too much untill I noticed the pinion seal leaking. I get under there and look and somthing tells me to take it out of gear and check the bearings. PLAY. Not much, just a touch. We dont drive it anymore after finding that, and we hadnt been driveing it much since I first noticed the oil. After stoping buy a couple shops, talking to people and a lot of discussion between ourselfs, we decide to do it ourselfs. I know whats involved. I have tore down a few diffs, but have never set up a ring and pinion. Though it is on my list of things to teach myself.
So we get it torn down to see the damage. Once apart the r&p look fine, no damage or any abnormal wear. The bearings are getting slightly pitted/scored (carrier bearings too) So we order a master install kit from randys ring and pinion. We also bough a cheap set of china carrier bearings and I made some setup bearings out of them with my die grinder.
We are to the point of setting the pinion bearing preload. We do not have a in-lb torque wrench. Where we work has all kinds of them, but they are the click style. We looked up the specs and it says preload should be between 10-20 in-lbs. We tried it with the click style with no luck, so we quit for the day. It wasnt untill later I read that it can not be done with the click style. No one we know has the type we need, and no places we have called rents them. We went to the local sears and all they had was the click style. We can not find the needle style anywhere.
What do we do???? Can it be done without one?

Try the motorcycle shops, they will at least have one they use. BTW, it's what you need to properly rebuild a steering box also. I have a D70-U in the same boat...

I bought an inch pound wrench at autozone for like $12. Its the needle kind, not a clicker. think they only come in 3/8ths though.
Or you can do the math and convert it down...

Yep, 12 in-lbs makes one foot pound. The foot pound ones were just not accurate enough.
Gonna brake out the phone book and see if there are any cycle parts stores.

Searched around for a while and had my best luck with (gasp) Ebay. We fround a proto dial type buy it now for $60. Seller has 100% feedback. So hopefully this will do the trick.
Thanks for the help. Now wish me luck on the carrier setup...lol

Let us know how it goes. I've got a couple to do and wish I could find a write up to prepare me for it. I got a nice dial indicator, and after reading this, I guess I'll need one of these also.
Thanks.

Here is the writeup I have been reading. Seems to be a very good one. But the pics have not been working. I wish they would.
