Well, yeah, sort of. The motor mounts are placed differently from a V8, but the bellhousing will bolt up. I think you need the flex plate from the 258. All the AMC I6s and V8s after 1971 have the same bellhousing pattern.

NW Arizona is a long ways to go for a 258, even if it were free. They are quite common, and inexpensive. If your Wagon had a V8, I'd look around for an AMC V8 as a temporary motor. Too many things to change to install a 258. Plus, you can probably sell your beater motor after you get the 401 in, so it won't be much of a loss.

If you're still set on a 258 I emailed you with a possible closer option.

what is your jeep set up for now?

IMO,if its got a v8 core support and frame mounts, its a waste of your time to stab in a 258 to get it driveable if youre just gonna pull it in the next few months for a v8. enuff little stuff is different that id just find a junker 304 or 360 to run while you build your nice 401.not to mention big stuff, like new driveshafts and exhaust.

The 304 came in a lot of CJ Jeeps, and are commonly being replaced by 360s, 401s and SBCs. Check the "for sale" forums on your local offroad boards, or some of the forums with more CJ owners like Jeeps Unlimited or Pirate.
