Is this really that bad of an idea?????
Ok so me and my bud were discussing our current fsj project (chief many moons). We have decided we wanted to go for a very stock look but still want to trail ride. Anywho the subject came up well should we bother to get a decent paint job because if we trail it is probably just going to get f'ed up. Well here it comes I thought I came up with the best ever "have your cake and eat it too" idea: What if we went ahead and got the paint job so when we kick around on the streets the rig looks good and when we go offroad we take some of those magnet mats, like the ones businesses put on there work trucks with all there info, and cover up the main parts of the body that are like to get scratched. You know like along the doors and the whole side pretty much and fenders. That way if brush rubs against it the magnet would take the hit and not the paint. I leaned back all triumphant and then was told that I was the biggest dumbass pretty much ever. I thought it was a good idea so I mentioned it to other buddies and was berratted similarly. Albeit the idea is kinda unusual but is it really that retarded??????? or

I don't think the magnetic stuff will hold over contours... used this stuff for numbers/ads on my "race car" when I was doing SCCA Solo II / ProSolo. It was fine on flat parts.
I wondered about the possibility of "wrapping" the car... figured when it looks crappy again, re-wrap it. Of course the key is-- how much does that cost?
If you do any kind of serious wheeling you're going to get dents whether you want to or not. My truck looks like complete crap now after a few years of driving the harder trails. It looked pretty good before that. Oh well.

Sounds like a good idea to me, but you want to make sure your jeep has NO dirt on it when you put those magnets on, or you might as well just let the brush scrape up the sides.

Your truck would look like it just rolled off of a car carrier. Ever see the new cars and their plastic protection sheets on them?
I dunno. I would probably work, but it would also probably look dorky, IMHO.

just paint the thing with one of the rubberized bedliners. a couple of the rigs on the site have done that. they look pretty good. pretty much primary colors but you could blend them to get some different shades. It won't solve a serious ding that dents the metal underneath but it should handle all the minor scratch type stuff.

if you have a magnet on the side and scrape a tree, the magnet is gonna slide down the side of your fsj as you 'slide' along the tree so what ever dirt from the trail that is under the magnet is gonna slide down your fsj

I do the computer work for an advertising place that does vehicle wraps, I also have a vehicle that is wrapped. It is very expensive. Last price I heard was $4000 just for the material with nothing on it. The van was swapped for a huge chunk of labor and some equipment, but he kinda hinted around at a $7000 price if we had paid for it straight out. Now that seems high but if you compare it to someone doing the crazy qraphics on it, it would be way more.
I used to do the door magnets, and no matter how much waxing and washing you do, it will eventually show on your vehicle.
My bet, would be to check ebay, there is a guy that sells complete bed liner kits in multiple colors. Everything including the gun is something like $250. That is what I am going to do from the belt line down on my jeep. I have done this to another vehicle and loved it. It was also an SUV and I sprayed the hood as well, I loved being able to throw stuff up on the hood while cleaning up the yard. I once had 4 wheels and tires stacked on my hood, I moved them around the yard and it never left a mark.
Yes I know I have a very large yard.

all Im gonna say
is "Ceramic Epoxy Primer". Smooth as glass, hard like nails.
Im actually doing this with my 77 Chief this summer. We did it with a buuddy's 66 Mustang and you CANNOT damage it as a surface agent.
I found a "paint run" in his engine bay and tried to scrape it off with my knife...couldnt even scratch it, with all 200 pounds of me leaning into that knife.
Like I said, Im going this way myself come June and I'll post pics, as the stuff even looks nice (high gloss finish) and can be tinted.

If you are thinking of painting it yourself use farm implement paint. It's not that expensive and it is also hard as nails.
