My FSJ: Full of GM, Ford & AMC parts
Now realize I am new to this "madness" but were the FSJ's all built with such a mixture of "all other companies" parts??? Man; The cap, rotor, points, and coil look GM, The Dist. looks like NOTHING I am familiar with, the module for the Dist. has FORD stamped into the metal, with an "AMC" sticker on it, The column is GM, the seats look like early Mustang????? Geez, what do you guys ask for when you go to the parts house to get parts???? Do you ALWAYS ask for JEEP parts, or do you ask for say GM stuf for the dist. cap and the parts under it, Ford for the electronics, and so on????? I am a CHEVY guy and have lots of SBC stuff so thats no problem, but the electrics under the hood (very scary looking by the P/O I might ad) are a little intimidating because I "think" it is Ford, and I don't know wuch about Ford.
While I am at it, WHAT EXACTLY DOES THAT --MODULE-- TO THE COIL/DISTRIBUTOR DO????? I only see a need for a power wire to a ballast resistor, to the coil to the points/condensor. Yet tied into ALL of that is a bunch of wires going into a 4" X 4' little metal box screwed onto the fender well????? WHY is it there, and what does it do??? Thanks, Ken

the little box is your ignition module. You have no "points" persay. All that is controled by the transistors in that box on the fenderwell. Cap, Rotor, ign mod, and such ARE all Furd...
AMC didnt have a lot of money ever and saved as much money as possible by buying parts from other manufacturers. Also, depending on the year of your rig, youll either have a GM trans or a ChryCo trans...

Before asking questions, give us a clue as to what year model you have.
As Jeep used different ignition systems depending on year. GM for points Prestolight for a couple years, and Ford/Motocraft till the end. They also used different engines depending on year
OHV I6 (Real close except for head design to Continental commercial engines) Rambler/Early AMC Buick and finally AMC.
So what are you running?, asking for Jeep parts at the auto parts store without knowing what you have is like Russian roulette, the parts books at stores are wrong much of the time.

Can you explain the "no points"????
It ---HAS--- points in it, I actually took the points, cap and rotor, from one of my Chevy cars and put it on the Cherokee, so THEY are G.M. stuff, I just DON'T understand that module thing!!! Power goesfrom the ballast resistor into the coil, up-grades it to fire into the plugs by way of the points opening & closing, and "tripping" the coil to fire thru the cap to the plugs.... What is that module doing??? why can't I just get rid of it??
My Cherokee is (this one) a '74 narrow track, BUT my '76 wide track, AND my '77 Wagoneer, ALL have the SAME stuff UNDER THE HOOD!!! The O N L Y difference I have been able to find between the 3 of them IS, the Wagoneer has a "hi/lo" lever right on the floor in front of the drivers seat. All have a 360 motor, and I KNOW the 2 Cherokees have Turbo 400's I haven't looked under the Wagoneer yet to see what tranny IT has, BUT it says"QUADRATRAC" on it, so I believe that makes IT a Turbo 400 also?!?!?

Everything pre-1980 should have the TH400 for an automatic, everything pre-'78 or so should be points, why you'd have Motorcraft ign modules on pre-78 trucks is beyond me, they didn't all come from one previous owner, did they?

Lol, sorry, ive been messing around with my '79s too long and didnt know what year your rig was. '74 you will have points, my bad. I have no Idea why you have the ign mod on your fender well then. Maybe a prestolite thing? I have no idea how a prestolite ign works though. I say go with the HEI setup that Rednex suggested...WAY better.. Git rid of that box, all the crappy points and everything, run one wire to the HEI for power and call it good. Youll start better, idle smoother and have better throttle response. Its a good thing.

You're talking about a '74 Cherokee? It should have a Delco (GM) points dizzy that says DELCO right on it. There should be no box except for the external voltage regulator for the Motorola alternator.
My PO previously had a (WRONG) Ford style voltage regulator:
Best bet? Get yourself a TSM and wiring diagram, rip out EVERYTHING and make it the way you want it. That way you have new wiring and can't blame anyone if it messes up on you! Personally I suggest the HEI.
BTW ~'75 to ~'77 used the silly "electronic" Prestolite - way to tell is if the vacuum advance canister is plastic.

The outsourcing was both a blessing, and a curse.
GM trannys and steering, Ford carbs and ignition, Dana axles. It's the Jeep tradition. All goes back to Bantam.

And ended with DCX when they finally stopped making the AMC I6. I always forget when i'm working on the wifes' GC 4.0 and try to use metric sockets and wrenches.

Yes they used parts from everybody. At least yours isn't one of the "crossover" models like 79-80. Where they were changing everything over.
Of course all of mine are from 79.

HEY...................Nailhead was mentioned, for the TRANNY. IS THAT TRUE??????????????? I have a 401 -Buick- NAILHEAD That I am building for my Hot Rod, a '23 Chopped coupe, and I was gonna have to buy an adapter to put a tranny behind it, BUT you mentioned a "nailhead" tranny, Is it REALLY a tranny that would bolt onto my Buick Nailhead motor??? That will save me about $750.00 in adapters, trannys, and mounts, ETC....
