Fuel gauge sending unit trap door

What year did they start putting an access plate on top of the fuel tank so you could access the sending unit?

My gauge is ok - it went to full when I grounded it at the bulk head connection. Hopefully its just a bad connection at the sending unit.

In case anyone is curious what it looks like...

There was about two inches of dirt in the top. I shop vac'd it out and cleaned the terminals - my fuel gauge started to work a little bit (but not correctly) - it moved from the bottom of the E to the top of the E on a full tank. I even put some dielectric grease in there. Must be a bad sending unit. Is it possible to get the sending unit out without dropping the tank?

While I was in there, I checked the black wire, and it was perfectly grounded. I grounded the pink wire and my fuel gauge pegged fuel. So I know the wiring and gauge are good.

If they started in '80, when did they stop? My '63 and my '91 both have them, so I assumed they all did. Did they quit doing it for a while?

This is a photo of my '63:

Yep. It's almost like Jeep engineers were actually THINKING!

Easy to remove. I just replaced mine. See http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=81793
Just disconnect both fuel lines, both wires, and remove the large nut. It's plastic so it shouldn't take to much effort.

I think from '74 to '79, there was no access plate. It's whenever AMC changed the rear seat design is when they deleted it.

the ground wire to the frame may be good but the male terminal on the sender may be bad. Before you give up on the sender it may be a loose ground lug. I suggest rigging a ground connection using a self threading screw and a ring eye terminal on enough wire to reach a good frame ground.

My 1965 low mileage, no rust waggoneer did not have a trap door. I had to make my own but the 1987 GW had one.
