Unhappy

My jeep won't start (still)! She wants to start but just isn't quite there. Ive replaced some wirirng, the starter, the starter switch, the solenoid, hell I even rebuilt the carb just for fun (well I noticed that I'm not getting gas in the carb) so I'm still not getting gas to spray in the carb, so any ideas on if it could just by a fuel filter issue or pump??

first what kinda wag you got, 360 258 etc. yr would be good too. well try this just to see if it'll shot. take some gas and poor it into the carb. dont need much but enough that it'll start and run a bit then it will shut off. second check the vac lines, maybe your not getting enough. try the gas first then let me know.

sorry about the lack of info, its a 1985 GW v8 automatic. I tried the gas thing several times and the car would start and then die after a few seconds. When I pushed in the gas pedal the engine would rev, but it would still die.

ok if you put gas in it and it ran thats a good start, we know it works. couple of things to check. filter, fuel sending unit. also look at the vac lines. i had to replace every single one like most people on this site. start with the filter and vac lines, it was cheaper that way. then go for the pump and sock.

Is the oil level higher than you remember? Does the oil smell like gas? I would just check the fuel pump.

Take the fuel filter off the steel line that comes from the fuel pump. Attach a longer rubber hose onto the metal line that will reach an empty jar or can in a safe spot held in the engine compartment. If the fuel level is anywhere near empty, even less than 1/4, add a couple of gallons of fuel to the tank. Have someone crank it over while you hold the hose in the container. If you smell heavy gas fumes in the container, keep cranking, it may take longer than you think to get gas squirting in the container.

No gas, replace the fuel pump. It's about $15 and very easy to see and get to the bolts and hoses from underneath. Well, undo the steel line from the top. If it doesn't go in fairly easy, bump the starter to get the cam lobe in a better position. Don't strip the bolts trying to leverage it in.

Good luck.

Does it run in start position and die when you release the key to the run position?

This is my opinion only, and the stock in that is getting weaker and weaker...
Beat my brains out when the exact same thing happened on a hill out of town. Did the gas thing--same results.
Turned out my problem was cracked male/female connectors from the ignition box to the harness to the coil and switch.
Electrical connection sounds like the last thing you'd think of in your case, but it's always the last thing....Brent

That is why I mentioned the above. About the same with my rig. Turned out to be a short in, of all things, the seat belt safety time out switch. That switch was in the run circuit. Drained off just enough current to kill the engine.

Did a whole lot of testing to find that one.
