crazy front death wobble!

Went wheelin the other day and on the ride home my 78 j-10 nearly fell apart. At around 20 miles per hour the front axle starting violently rocking side to side! To make a long story short I checked everything when I got home. Ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, lug nuts, etc. All were tight so I was baffled. I put a on new stabilizer and even replaced the steering gear. The rag joint on the steering shaft was tight and still at about 20-25 miles an hour the front axle would nearly fly out from underneath the truck. I repalced the leaf bushings and shackle bushings, then tightened the u-bolts. Still no help it actually was getting worse. I looked at the center pins and they appeared to be fine. Finally I had my neighbor rock the truck side to side while I watched the front end. The axle was actually sliding side to side on the springs. Both center pins had rounded off. Neither one was broken they were just very badly rounded almost to the point of being sheared but not quite. Just thought I would share this. If you have a crazy front wobble check you center pins. If you don't have a front trac-bar then front axle puts alot of sideways stress on these little bolts.

Thanks for the tip, that was a lot of work to discover... but at least you can feel good about the front end for a good long while now.

This also means that your U bolts have been stressed beyond what is normal. Head to a good spring shop and get some new ones.
