another new guy

I got a 1975 Cherokee not too long ago and want to start the design for a resto-mod. I am going to do as much Willys/Kaiser Jeep items as I can and let the rest take care of itself. I have the Rhino grill, Super console w/ clock, and emblems for it. I sell vintage Jeep parts and free-lance building projects around Knoxville, TN, I live in Maryville, and just have fun while my wife is at work. I have 7 Jeeps right now, the other 6 are Jeepsters and Jeepster/Commandos, and at one time had a '89 GW. My son cried when that rolled away. I will keep you posted on what happens. I am going to strip it before summmer and get going on it when I have the time in the summer. Thanks for the forum, and I am sure I will be posting a few things when the time comes. Bryan

WOW, this place is active.

I bought out a Jeep dealer in NJ a few years back. It took two 24' trucks to bring the parts to TN. Most of the chrome stuff is gone and accessories, but I have a bunch of hard parts and things I still have not seen. I use e-bay user name jeep-quest. I have not had a lot of time to list things lately because of other work and trying to sell a second house. I also just got finished building the ice skating rink in downtown Knoxville. It is an annual temp. outdoor rink for the season.

Thanks for the comments. The body is pretty solid except for one rear 1/4 panel. The floors and all seem pretty good. I was second high bidder on it on e-bay and the top bidder didn't want to tow it home. After an e-mail and phone conversation, I helped him strip some parts off of it and he let he have the Jeep and title. I didn't complain.

The big project I want to do is a diesel engine. I know nothing about diesels, but want to learn. I am leaning 4bt, I think that is the popular change over, and will need help with that. I know there is a member in Knoxville that just did that to a J series truck. I want to look at it first hand.

I am going to farm out the body work and do the details myself. I have a decent knowledge of mechanical work, but like getting things right instead of trial and error. I will also ask questions. This will be my work truck for the Jeep parts business. Thanks again.

Thanks guys, I will be at a get-together wherever it might be in the South East. I do have QT stuff and even have a rebuilt, by the dealer, complete TC. I guess I will keep that set-up even though I have heard them called quadra-crap.

For me the ultimate is a panel delivery, I didn't think I would find one of those. I also figured that this way I get better axels and disk brakes. I will keep the slot wheels and put spinners on them with the Kaiser emblem.

I started the strip yesterday, and there is some rust in the floor boards, but not too bad. I also came up with some really good ideas for the interior. I also found out that it is a Levi's edition. I still have the tan rear seat and will be going leather so if anyone wants the upholstery, let me know. I will try to take it off on one piece. I am also going to post some wanted items in that section. Thanks again.

They were called that by people who didn't take care of them or operate them properly.

Here are some of my observations from running a QT rig for 12 years and seeing the problems that members from this board have encountered:

1) The QT needs its special fluid to work. If it doesn't have this fluid, the clutch cones in the case will burn up quickly. It should be changed every 30K miles. I change the fluid yearly as it is (relatively) cheap insurance for good case operation.

2) Emergency Drive is simply that- for emergencies. If operated in e-drive on surfaces where there is good traction, the strain on the case will cause things to break. I can count on both hands the times I've truly needed e-drive in 12 years.

3) Chain Maintenance. Like any chain driven case, the chain in the QT will stretch over time. The original chain in the QT on my 73 J4000 went almost 90K miles before it started to slip. A check on it at the yearly fluid change will assure its in good shape. Any more the 3/4" of slop in the chain and it's time to replace.

4) Skinny Pedal procedures. I am even guilty in this area. I have to look it up, but the QT was never supposed to handle high HP engines- I believe Jeep recommends 250 HP max going into a QT. Will it handle higher HP. Sure, but you have to avoid hammering the gas pedal from a dead stop. I built the 360 in my J4000 and it is putting out about 350 HP/400 ft/lbs of torque according to a desktop dyno. I love to use those 350 horses too and quickly found it difficult to shift the QT into low range. What I found was that the splined mainshaft in the low range was twisted from hammering the pedal while in low range. The J4000 would launch like a dragster, but at the expense of almost toasting the QT. Roger Mears ran a QT in the Baja 1000 and other competitions and won. I had the privilege of meeting him a few years back at a NASCAR race in KC and told him about my J4000. He said he was running almost 500 HP through it but was always careful when going from a dead stop. He said that they always carried an extra low range even though he rarely used it.

I believe that the Borg-Warner QT is the finest full-time 4WD ever developed. If operated and maintained properly, it can provide years of trouble-free service and get you through or out of some serious conditions.

WELCOME

I've not only seen you on Ebay, you are on my preferred seller list. Not to mention you have a bunch of my money now But I have some nice new Jeep parts.

I'll give your Quadra-trac parts a good home if you want to unload all that junk. I won't even charge you removal fees.
