Undercoating or bedliner on skid plate??
Gonna replace my WAY rusted out skid plate soon and was wondering how to rustproof the inside. I don't like the sticky undercoating but if that is the best way to go, that's what I'll go with. What do you guys think??

if you put undercoating or bedliner, just make sure that the drain holes are still open. I prefer to drill a few extra drain holes just to be safe (and yes, after removing the gas tank and the insulating pad, which gets holes drilled in it as well)

i have been using a product called chassis saver on my wag, it is supposed to seal any and all rust and keep it from rusting. i did my intire floorboards with it before i covered it in bedliner. its a great product. it is a one step process. i plan on using it on my axles as well.

A buddy of my that's a body guy says they've been using Chassis Saver on all their restorations lately and are really happy with it.
BTW if your skid plate is REALLY rusted plan on repairing that section of frame too. I had to do that to my 90 GW a few years ago.
Here's the pics I took of that Frame Repair .

The OEM skid plate was galvanized. I used Duplicolor spray in bedliner on mine, but it did peel off (even used their primer, too) several years later.

I replaced my skid plate and pad this summer on my '88 GW. I also had to repair the rusted frame. I purchased the new skid plate and used POR-15 on it. That should last until I'm in the nursing home................
The replacement is not that hard at all. Make sure that "most", if not all, of the gas is gone. A lighter tank makes the job much easier. Also, be patient when sliding the new plate in, up on the frame.
If ya get stuck, give me a yell.........

BTW after I repaired my skid plate I used all stainless steel hardware so the skid plate could more easily be removed for inspection and rust control, as it WILL rust again.
I plan on pulling my skid plate on my 86 this winter while it's in storage and I'll replace all the hardware on it with stainless also.

I had mine sprayed with bed liner seven years ago, still looks good. POR-15 or 3M Body Schutz would work well also.

Actually, I was gonna fab a stainless skid plate but the part is so complex, and I'm not sure if all the dimensions have to be held for clearence and whatnot so I opted to get a good used one from a peep on here and coat it with something to prevent/slow down the rust. I could prolly go ahead and attempt one but that's a lot of stainless to waste on "I hope this fits" ... On the other hand, If it worked out like my fan shroud, it'd be worth it's weight in gold!!
