360 gets no fuel

I have a 1978 j10 which was running fine until I attemped to set the choke. It has an amc 360 with a 4bbl motorcraft. Now if I spray starter fluid into carb it cranks right up and runs until fluid is used. Will the choke cause this or do I have some other fuel delivery problem? how do I check the fuel pump? does anyone have other possibil;ities I should check?

Pull the fuel line after the pump, before the carb...put the line in a jar and give it a crank on the ignition, if you get fuel in the jar the pump is working, if no fuel is in the jar either the pump died or there is a "sock" in the tank that works as a filter, it could be clogged or maybe a clogged/faulty fuel line from the tank to the pump. If the pump checks out ok, change the filter. start with this

when you reset your choke, double check the process:

1. with the vehicle cold after sitting overnight, get in and turn key to the on position (but don't start it)
2. press the gas pedal once to engage the choke
3. get out and remove the air cleaner assembly and measure the gap between the closed butterfly and the carb throat (should be 1/8" opening)
4. if not 1/8", use a 1/8" drill bit (DON'T DROP IT!!) as a measuring tool until you get it right
5. make sure your 12v wire is connected to the choke and has 12v in the on position

If that is set correctly, then you need to check the mixture and the fuel pump operation (as xsonmyeyes suggested). Also, one good thing to check is the oil......yes, the oil. Pull the dipstick and smell the oil. If there is a strong gas odor, your fuel pump diaphragm has broken and is dumping raw gas into the crankcase.
