Snap Ring position question

I have a 1978 AMC JEEP WAGONEER.It has quadtrac and is full time 4 wheel drive.
The outer end of the front axles has 2 snap ring positions. One towards the end of the shaft the other a little farther in.Theres a splined disc behind it and a springbehind that. The spring pushes the axle outward towards the dust cover.Which snap ring groove should be used? Neither Haynes Nor Chilton's covers such things.
