Broken axle

Hi, is it common to break an axle in a m 20 with 35 inch tyres as mine broke at the spline idling up a small rock step. also the transfer droped in and out of front drive all the way home(7 hr drive) . it has a 727 auto.
thanks warren.

Too many possibilities....are you the original owner, has the previous owner abused it, is the axle housing bent, is your carrier cracked inside the diff housing? 35" tires should be ok for that axle. I ran 36's on my 20 for a long time without any problems.

How much skinny pedal were you giving it? Were you bouncing? Rocks, mud?

Sounds like it was getting close for a while if thats all it took. And I have a feeling these axles are not a dime a dozen there in OZ as they are here. I am sure one of us here could ship some two you though, never hurts to have spares.

Good luck, hope the next one holds up. I think it probably will depending on how hairy the trails are. We've got more than a few folks here that run 33's and 35's on D44's and M20's. Other than Dome, I don't think I've ever witnessed or know of anyone who broke an axle shaft in one of these. (I think his was caused by a locker giving it up)
