the cause of my headache.

i've been tryin' to track down a miss for a week.compression test came up good.pulled the valve covers, all the rockers were good, and had full lift.pulled the intake, found a lot of oil on the intake valves, thought maybe gummed up valves.i always suspected the cast iron square bore maniflod i had on was leaking from the underside,as it idled with the idle screw backed all the way out.the oil made me suspect it more,so i threw a non egr performer intake on,but still had the miss.

so,figured a badly burnt valve, was preparing to pull the heads, had the rockers off, when i leaned over the head, and felt a valve open under my hand.

found that #2 cylinders exhaust valve spring broke, one coil from the bottom.it was suckuing open on the intake stroke, causing the miss.

replaced the spring, runs like a champ.

Dang...good find.

I'd have given up long before I would have ever found that.

Lucky you! Been there, done that.... Glad you didn't wind up dropping a valve--that would've been messy indeed....

I had broken valve springs--exhaust on cylinder # one and intake on cylinder #2 of the old flathead 6 in my Dodge truck many years ago. They both happened almost at once! I decided that there were likely more to follow, and decided to do a bottom-up rebuild on the engine. Glad I did. What seemed to me like just another of Life's little sucker punches turned out to be a message about greater things. The rings on all the pistons save one were broken, and were overlapping themselves in lands that were burned wide enougn to accommodate double the ring thickness to allow such juxtaposition.

As for you trying to "track down a miss" I hope for your sake that Ristow II didn't catcha!

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I had not thought about a broken exhaust valve spring. Will pull the valve cover tomorrow and check valve train, rockers and the springs.
