towing and trans

What are the pros and cons of towing with manual vs. automatic trans? Is one preferred over the other? I am assuming the automatic has an external cooler, but everything else is stock. I want to use my TF727 Chero to tow my CJ7. I think this combo is fine, but it got me thinking about the differences.

For ther manual, you might go through clutches a little faster. I'm not sure if there would be any other issue, plus you get engine braking.

For the automatic, it will run hotter (which the cooler should take care of), but I can't think of anything else.

So, is it a matter of preference?

Thanks

i like towing with an auto. you can always put on teh largest tranny cooler that you can find and wire in a fan and temp gauge (which is something you'll want), install a heavy duty shift kit for towing, and a torque convertor designed for it also. the shifts are faster and it is easier to start off if you are going up hill from a stop.

a manual is all gears inside so the chances of something going inside or wearing out are slim to none, there are so many heavy duty and performance clutches out there that you'll be able to find one that suits your needs. also you can run a thicker gear lube to help keep yout manual from over heating.

i had a 92 dodge dakota 2wd truck with a centerforce II clutch and loved it. i could load the bed up with gravel and go up a hill and stay at the speed i was doing.

i have towed with my j10 after i installed a heavy duty shift kit and larger external cooler and i had no problems with it at all.
