J-truck pricing

Well I am in love with the J-trucks and I have been looking all over the midwest and haven't found many for sale. I orginally was only going to spend $500 on a working 4x4 to beat around in and found a cherokee but it sold so I'm back on the hunt. How much would a decent J seris truck cost(decent mechanically, body in bad shape)? I want to find something with a bad body but orginal parts for now and then next year start building up a nice one. I live in Iowa so I would like to keep it either in the midwest or west area. I could MAYBE swing up to maybe $1000-$1500 if I had to. I figure I might as well get what I want the first time.

Would I have any luck finding one around $500 running in this area? Or am I just dreaming?

Thanks for your time,

Darren

i think you are dreaming for $500. i got mine up here in the north east for 1800. the body needed a little love and the engine and and trany needed a tune up and new fluid. if your looking for something with solid panels everywhere and a desent running drive train look a little further south and expect to pay $1500-$2500, depending on motor, tranny, t-case, axles, and body/frame condition.

I wouldn't really care if it was really rusty as long as it ran and worked. I wouldn't mind doing a tune up or having to replace a few cheaper things. I have looked on the craigstlist for texas, arizona, new mexico with little to no luck. I had more luck in missouri where I found some they were just not running or to expensive. Thanks for the response.

Its getting harder and harder to find cheap J-Trucks that are in decent shape. So best of luck in your search.

I would think long and hard on that. Mechanical issues are so much easier to deal with. Rusted bodies and frames will bust out your piggybank faster than Rosie O'Donnell can polish off a Twinkie.

Take your time and put a few extra bucks up each month. You'll be happier and much better off in the long run, to search for a rig that's not consumed by rust.

The $500.00 rigs are out there. 80% of the time there not worth it. Especially if your looking for one that's a driver.

How about this? It is not mine but I think it is worth a look.

Well right now I don't have very many options on 4x4's so I am willing to spend a little bit more if I can find something decent. I just can't find anything decent that is a resonable distance away. The only truck I am considering right now is a 77 dodge power wagon for 2k but thats quite a bit more then what I can afford right now. If I can find what I want in decent shape I can probably go closer to $1200. Do you think I could find something like that just with a 350/360 and running?

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/car/353247816.html

Ya I saw that one on ebay. That would be great expect I don't really wanna buy off ebay and its a little pricey.

Thanks for the posts guys I really appercaite all the help. Is there anyway to search registered/titled vechicles in a state?

500 j-trucks show up from time to time, but as a solid driver not too often.

if you want a good driving j-10 (body damage or not) i would expect to pay inbetween 1000-3000.

What about a j-20 or a j4000? Or even a 60's j3000 or j20? Sorry I know I'm kinda all over with asking about those I just have found those and they are options for me depending on if I can find a way to get them to Iowa for resonable. How much would shipping a truck cost?

*shrugs* I find a non-workin' J-truck is cheaper to buy an' tends to be easy to get runnin'.

I picked up a 78 J10 an' have only dropped 200 into it to get it runnin', an' replace everythin' that needed to be done

i'm not too sure about your state or surrounding states, but in NH they will have two auctions a year to get rid of things they just don't want. everything from desks and chairs to vehicles to whatever else they have. i know of a few guys around me that have been able to get a state issued 4x4 truck that is in somewhat desent shape and runs for pretty cheap. sometimes they let you show up a few days in advance to look at the vehicels to see which one(s) you want to bid on.

That one on Craigslist looks pretty rough. He sent me some bigger pics of it.
I'd keep my eyes open down there in IA, I bought a 72 j4000 that is pretty solid for $400 from NW IA and paid $250 to haul it up here.

There was a 75 or so J20 near Rochester,MN for $500, but I think it was a bit crusty too.

I'm working on my fleet and may have one for sale before too long

I am located about 35 miles North of Des Moines right next to Ames.

I know that one on craigslist is very rough and I'm not really considering it to much but you can go ahead and get it if you are interested in it. If you do decide to sell one of your fleet I would be very interested becuase more then likely I could find somebody with a truck/trailer and go get it depending on what part of Minnesota you are from.

Right now I only have $600 but around July 4th I will have $900-$1100. I would really like to keep it under a thousand though.

Jeeping1974 good suggestion I will try to look for something like that here. Does the dot hold the auction or which department should I look under.

I would consider a non running one but I am not the most engine savy but I could have some friends help me get it running as long as it wasn't to hard.

Decent Jtrucks are not always easy to find. We stalked our J20 for almost 7 years before the PO decided to sell it. Good Luck!
