Need Advice

To All:

I am going to take a look at a 1975 j10. The guy selling the truck says the truck has been sitting for about 6-7 years. I will not buy unless I hear the motor run. The guy is worried that if we stick in a battery (in addition to getting out the old gas and checking the oil level) to get the truck started, we may "hurt" the engine until the oil gets up into the engine. Motor has about 77,000 miles. Question, how (or what) did you guys do to start a motor that had sit up for some years without destroying it? Any way to get oil to the engine so we can turn it over? Thanks in advance.

you can buy an oil priming tool. I believe Bulltear.com has them for sale. BJsoffroad.com might have them also. Basically it is a specialized attachment for a drill so that you can take the distributor out and run the oil pump with the drill.

You are going to have to check for varnish (dried gas) in the float bowls of the carb.

Also don't be suprised if there are lots of oil leaks from dry seals suddenly being exposed to oil.

Good luck... AMC engines are tough to "hurt"... I have run mine up to 290* on my mechanical guage and it still runs without smoking. I wouldn't have believed it if someone had told me but I drove it last night.

engine

Pull all the plugs out, turn it over without any compression, maybe a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder.Should turn over easily. Then let the starter spin it a few mor times. that should be enough to get the oil going then button it all back up deal with the gas, it should be fine. LOL
