temp sending unit placement (Trans temp and oil temp?)

Ok everyone I have my trans temp gauge in and my oil temp gauge is on the way. I hae heard so many conflicting and different theories on where to place the oil temp and trans temp sending units on these rigs. So can everyone please give me some ideas on the placement of these sending units? Whatever the group concensus/most logical answers appear to be is where I shall place the sending units. So far I have heard that you can drill a hole in the trans and oil pans and place them there or that you can put them inline in the oil and trans tubes I have also heard that there is a test port on the trans somewhere??? Another voice mentioned an oil filter adapter with a sending unit hole. I am lost on this so please everyone give me your thoughts. (Otherwise I will have to figure it out myself) Probably leaning towards putting it in the pans for both sensors.

Trans temp???

I plan to put my tranny temp sending unit in the test port on the drivers side.

.....and I put my oil temp sending unit here....

in-line on the route back from my oil cooler. If I was not running an oil cooler, I think I would put the sending unit by the oil pressure sending unit. You could put both senders in the pans, but I think it is risky if you plan to take the jeep off-road.

If you really want to know how hot the tranny is running, you should put the sender in the output line heading to the cooler as close as you can to the tranny.

If you place it in the pan, you'll get the temp of the fluid after it has gone through the radiator (and trans cooler if equipped). That won't tell you much and you'll get different temps on a trans cooler equiped rig and one without under the same circumstances.

I put my first sender in the pan on my first rig and it barely ever made the gauge move (I tested the sender and wiring to confirm). Got better readings in the line.
