If you want to install a trans temp sending unit, then one of the best mounting locations is the trans pan. That way you get accurate readings of the temp inside the actual trans. Many vendors out there sell trans pans with port/holes already pre cut for the installation of trans temp gauges and or drain plugs. Some have ports for both. Check around on the net and you will find companies that already make such items. I actually already have my trans temp and oil temp gauges installed but have not installed the sending units yet. I of course will be installing the oil temp gauge in the oil pan.

I've always heard that you want to put the trans sender right at the output line on the tranny, that way you get the temp of the fluid coming right out of the tranny. The fluid in the pan is cooler because it just got back from a round trip to the radiator and trans fluid cooler if equipped.

I don't remember where it's located but there is at least one test plug in the case of the transmission, usually near the pan rail. They are intended for diagnostic pressure testing but are usually the same size as the sending unit. Screw out the plug, screw in the sender. You can also put a "T" fitting in the cooler line. Pick a line. Some say to put it in the output line from the transmission. B&M recommends the return line but I don't know why.

JAYRODOH has it right ... logic intimates that the hottest fluid will be coming OUT of the tranny towards any outside cooling sources and then back IN to the pan.
CHAZER didn't specify which tranny he is running so I'm not sure if his trans has this "test plug" that LOUM is referring to. I'd really like to know if the TH400 has one for sure. After suffering a trans fire once before I care NOT to go through that EVER again!!

chazer,
If its a T-400, the pan should look like the State of Texas (sorta). There is a test plu in the drivers side which is whre I plan to install mine.
