NOS QT Install
Well, the snow is melted and we finally had some decent weather today. Got this thing installed in Krista's77 Wagoneer. My arms feel rubbery after bench pressing it into place. (I'm outa shape)

The ignition system is dorked up, so we haven't driven it yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Did you try drying that module out? Probally lots of condensation. Or crappy gas from sitting all winter.

Actually, it got dark before I could get the drive shafts in too.
So, Yup. The ignition was bad once the Jeep sat 2 weeks in front of the house last year after we got back from Ouray. When I went to move Phoebe to the back for the QT R&R, it wouldn't start. A packrat had been at work under the hood. So we towed her back there and she's been sitting there since Aug 7th. That's when we discovered the remanufactured QT was toast inside (after ~300 miles). I was soooo PO'd, I turned my back on her and she has just sat there all winter. Sometimes you just have to walk away from IT.

Heh, that would be one way to delegate this Jeep to light duty. Hopefully we get a little smarter as we get older right? It is much easier to bench press one of these without the low range hanging on it. The big C clip on the collar is a PITA to remove when you get ready to install the Low Range but it is handy to leave in so the tranny tailshaft gets lined up proper. Gonna have to get a better tool for that though. Krista finally got it off after I cussed at I for 30 minutes.

They are still out there. We picked up 2 and another member here picked up 2. I think yet another member picked up 1 or 2 as well. The numbers are dwindling from this one source...

Let me know....
Flint, let me know how it runs once you get it finished. Mine is for sale since I went the NP205 route but still interested to see how the NOS unit functions.

Nice write up Flint. Never believed that a QT could look that clean.

Nothing against the QT, but I'm sure these NOS units are bringing a pretty penny considering NOS cones for the diff are all but long gone for rebuilds. Considering the money and the piss-poor vacuum operating system ($75 for a vacuum valve? please!) I'm more inclined to spend that money converting to a conventional style t-case.
Of course there's also the Atlas II or Stak's 3-spd Monster Box options for those with more money than they know what to do with. Wish I had that problem. lol

i am more inclined to build a cable shift for the Q-trac than spend 75 bucks on the vacuum valve

Dave, when you get that cable shifter setup worked out be sure to make up a couple as I'd definitely be willing to buy one. The only thing keeping me from wanting to keep the QT right now is the vacuum system.
I've looked at using a D300 shifter from an early 80's CJ to replace the low-range flag shifter, just haven't gotten around to seeing if I can make it work or not. Positioned right you could probably get away with a simple linkage bar for this one rather than a cable.

i'm glad to hear your install went MUCH smoother than mine. part of the problem may have been installing the lowrange to the t-case before it was installed, it made for one tight fit and one heavy sombeech!

I guess the considering the vacuum operation of the shifter for any transfer case would be up to the individual. I find it hard to say this is a bad feature when so many vehicles with AWD and 4WD features use some combination of computer, electronic or vacuum controls in them today. This is a personal preference, not something to make a debate on whether you like it or not. But I digress...
QT vacuum shifters can be found on eBay for $25 for example. If you paid $75 for one, that is your choice. I still digress...
Let's just say this thread is focused on the installation of a non-modified NOS Quadratrac transfer case. Just that. All other chatter is not really on the topic here folks. Including your reasoning why you would not install a Quadratrac or even use vacuum controls. Sheesh...

lol @ mr grumpy pants :P
how hard is it to get vaccum to 3 little lines? they do make things called vaccum storage containers if you're running really low vac. pressure.

Flint,
great writeup. I know that when I put the first of my two in, my seals were very questionable. On top of that, the vacuum diaphram would not hold vacuum. Be sure to test yours. It looks great though.
It is funny, it had been so long since my jeep was fulltime, I had to get use to driving it again. I think it was the fact that the diff is now brand new but you can actually feel it break free and then lock when going sharp around turns. We took it to my parents cabin in Big Bear and had it on the snow covered ice covered roads. It perfomed flawlessly.
I am not sure if it is the 35's, the high pinion center section, or the lack of a steering stabilizer, but the steering is a little twitchy when going slow around turns while giving it gas. I think that as the case gets broken in, it will go away. Diff is just tight. I unfortunately did not use the thicker gasket and I have a little weaping trans fluid coming out between the two.
Other than that, all my drivetrain vibrations are gone. It is smooth as silk going down the freeway at 75 mph.
Talk to you soon,
Kevin.
