Intro from the NewB

Hi all! Just got my first FSJ this weekend and thought I'd throw a quick "HI" and introduction.

Just bought a 79 Cherokee Golden Eagle from another list member. It's literally 99% rust free and has a nice running 360/T400. I plan on building it up as a daily driver to replace my truck which is going back from lease later this year. It's a plan I've wanted to do for a while...hopefully it will work out!
Future plan include 4" lift, dynomated interior, new seats, custom door panels, paint and decals. Then, when I get tired of the gas mileage, I'll be putting in a 350TBI/700R4/208 setup that I have. BTW...anyone know anything about getting a decal set for my rig? I'm guessing it would have to be hand done, but any help would be much appreciated.

About myself...I'm a computer guy by trade, but I have lots of experience with engine swaps, tranny swaps, GM electronics, LT1 stuff, turbo charged 4 cyl dodge cars...a little bit of everything. I come from the "build it don't buy it" school of thinking! :-D

Anyways, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions once I get into this thing!

Very nice ride !! You have yourself a $12k truck (as long as you keep the golden eagle decals). Now you can run with the "Big Dawgs" like Pop

Nice find.

But skip the 350 BS. That's for the illiterates that can't figure out how the superior AMC 360 or 401 can work. If you really need a Chevy, get a Blazer and fiddle around with that for fun.

Sweet, looks really clean. If I were you I'd clean it up, do the interior nice and simple and in keeping with the Golden Eagle motif, stick on a 4" lift and 33's or 35's on the stock rims, and build a nice 401 with a 4spd for it. That would make it a really unique and cool AMC Jeep piece, I also prefer to keep the AMC over a Chevy; sticking a chevy mill into an old Jeep, especially one with a rare trim package, just gives me a feeling of something being mismatched and done improperly, like it's incomplete, but that's just me. Welcome to the board and enjoy the new rig!

Looks good. I like the WT Cheros myself. Stick with an AMC motor - they can be excellent, and are very tunable - quite a few people with 350hp+ engines.

WOW! Thanks for the welcome! This Cherokee has already gotten more response that I anticipated...including the couple in the Wrangler taking pics of it at the gas station while it was being trailered home!

I'll be honest...I bought this truck to be a daily driver so I was real keen on the idea of keeping the current drivetrain, mostly because I want FI and overdrive. However, the short distance that I have driven it, it seems to run very nice. It also has the 16% overdrive that everyone HATES so that could be another strike against it (I might like it tho since this is not a trail truck). I will say that because it runs so nicely and has working A/C, the drivetrain swap has been moved to the end of the list of things to do.

And don't worry, the golden eagle decals are definetly staying.
