Has this ever happened to anybody?

I was finishing up my on-board-air conversion under the hood and I also had to reseal my water pump. So there has not been water in the engine for a few weeks and it has dipped down around the freezing mark a few times. After getting the water pump sealed and the front of the engine back together, I started filling the radiator with antifreeze and heard it hit the ground a few seconds later. I knew it was a freeze plug but I figured it was just rusted through. Upon further inspection, I removed the starter and noticed that there is no freeze plug at all in the hole. I looked down and there it is on the ground. But that's not all, on the ground just about a foot away is another freeze plug. Same hole just on the other side of the engine. I have never seen or heard of this before especially with no water in the engine. Anyway, I just knocked them back in with alot "goop" and everything is fine. Has this ever happened to anybody? It just kinda boggled my mind that this happened especially 2 freeze plugs at one time.

Had it happen on a different engine. There must have been residual water int he bottom of the block. Feel special that your freeze plugs did what they were supposed to do. Most just rust in place and don't pop out with ice.

You're fortunate your freeze plug did it's job ("popped out).I remember a time I was out on a ship when home had a quick/surprise freeze;I was not fortunate.
"Gooping" a freezeplug in is only inviting trouble. Can either come out under cooling system pressure,or not do it's job.You might want to keep a couple of rubber/expandable type plugs in your toolbox/rig just in case your "caught out" with the same problem.

Unless you pulled the drain plugs from the block, there was water in the engine, can't say if the engine is trashed or not, you will have to discover that yourself.

Good luck Mike D.
