Question

On to the transfer case. (I am trying to get extra credit here)
My Chero has a handle under the seat for low range. Problem is, there is nothing attached underneath and my transfer case lacks the extra low range parts. A guy showed me where it is supposed to bolt on but has a big "cap" bolted on instead. There is also orange rtv stuff squished out where gaskets are supposed to be so that tells me it has definitely been apart.

So here's the question: Does afore mentioned details tell you that this is not the original T Case? Would they have ever put the low range handle on there without the stuff on the T case that it is supposed to operate?

My T case leaks just a bit, shifts real hard into reverse and lacks the low gear. I'm think'n perhaps I ought to be a replac'n it! I could really use the low range for the hills out here.

I honestly don't know what transmission I have. All it says on the pan is something about General Motors Hydromatic or someth'n, no numbers.

Sorry for the length of the post. I really am learning Guys! Thanks for the advice.

You have a TH400 tranny and a Quadra Trac t-case. It would appear that someone has swap out the t-case on you for one that does not have the low range. You can just put on a low range unit. Many people have sold them here. Where is it leaking from? And the clunk into reverse is standard with the TH400/QT combo. It is because the slpines get wore down on the inside where the output shaft goes in.

Low range units for the Borg Warner QT were optional items... So yeah, someones swiped yours, no big deal if you dont go off-roading.

Just because there's rtv on the case, doesn't mean there's any real reason to worry (unless its not functioning properly)

Your transmission is a TH400 (gm transmission, w/ amc bolt pattern). Good stout tranny.

You reminded me Andy that the T case has a metal tag that does say Borg Warner. It has a very slow leak, nothing like what I am getting from the transmission - it is practically pouring fluid out.

I am planning to change the seals & pan gasket & filter. Is this going to be the right time to swap out the T case or are they separate jobs?

Also, is the "hard shift" into reverse telling me that it's going to need work later or is it pretty normal wear?
