If you get an AMC cased t-400 the pattern is the same.
You will need an AMC t-400 flexplate, and it will need to be balanced to your 4.0. Most shops can "match balance" to your existing flexplate or flywheel. You will also need an earlier style starter if your xj has the later "mitsubishi" starter.

a factory 258/th400 flex should work,to my knowledge all the six flexplates are neutral balanced.
bolting it in is the easy part. the trickier,or more expensive, part is getting the crank sensor to work. youll have to pay big $$ for the kit that relocates it to the balancer,or machine a provision for it into the th400.
then you have the prollem of the d20 output being on the wrong side, but im sure you got a game plan for that
one last thot,if it were me id use a 904(they can be built to handle a fair amt of power) instead of the th400,then you can use a cj d300,wich is a better transfer case, and an all around better setup. there will be plenty of room for the front driveshaft, and there is alot of cool beefup stuff for the d300. i ran this setup in my GW for a couple of years without prollems. nothing swaps easily with the d20 on a th400 without a tailsahft change, not to mention that the factory adapter is notoriously week and prone to cracking.
my $.02

You can flip the 300 to be a drivers drop.

xj going to have axles from wagoneer in front to match d20. adaptor is advanced adapters piece. crank trigger is easy enough to figure out. just without lookig didnt know if 258 and 4.0 had same bolt pattern. d300 may be a good idea but already have beefy d20 with adapter thanks all
