I just did a coil conversion on my friends 81 long box toy (a three link with a panhard bar) and xj coils, and it turned out better than i had expected, anyway im thinking of doing a similar conversion on my 64 shortbox, but it seems to me that an air bag would always locate its self on the pad (and move less on down travle) than a spring, implying that im only connecting the bag to the frame, any body done this? and why should or shouldnd i do this? and if coils are the consensus what coils to run?

So, the question is: are airbags a better way to go because their movement is simpler than a coil? (a coil tends to compress into a "C" shape, while an airbag seems to just collapse into itself). This is assuming, of course, that the link setup is a constant between the two different spring types.

Ahh forget it, I don't think anyone wants to answer the question . I would prefer coils because of the simplicity, but then, I am not building any Toyotas, either .

Airbags move just like coils do. I've seen plenty of them get twisted up. Springs cost half as much as bags and are simpler. On the other hand, air bags make a really cool shotgun-like sound when they blow. A real attention grabber!

I run air bags and have never seen them twisted up but I have popped one but it was a slow leak from rubbing on a piece of sheetmetal we left sharp. I think some of the EJS visitors can attest that the air bags are tough after I jumped my jeep 3-4 feet in the air 15 times. The problem with airbags is that they need to be mounted somewhere and that would mean if you are using a airbag solely for your suspesion lift then you need
1. Air supply
2. Air tank
3. air bag controller
4. link system
5. air bag mounts ont he frame and axle
thats what makes it so expensive.. think the bags are expensive try adding up the other junk

So here is a new monkey wrench in the gears, what if I run A cam, a link and then run the airbag (or coil) horizontal to the frame? so hypathetically the axle goes up, the link goes up, moves aginst the cam and thusley moves aginst the cam then to the spring (or coil)mounted to the frame horizontily, this would or could allow me many adjustments, including air on the bag (if the bag was the choice), and multipal holes on the cam could adjust ride height and ride acordingly.
