That's my angle, keep most of the weight down low and lift the body for clearance. Those of you with the sawzalls can cut all the weight you want, but I'm fixin' to keep as much sheet metal as possible to keep the stock look.
I've seen wagons on cut down one tons with narrow 38's and doublers that looked like killer trail rigs... but there are a lot of places they won't go either.

everyone builds their own rig for the type of wheeling they want ot do. i would neve rput a body lift in my jeep. but hten again, i dont' like the stock look for my rockcrawler, i jsut cut it till it works like i want it too.

what?!

overrated? it is prolly not quite as important in the desert,on the slickrock, since it takes a long, long time to wear ruts in the rocks. but i bet there are still alot of spots in the desert that more room under the diffy lets you get thru more elegantly, with less wheel spinning. otherwise all you guys fortunate enuff to live close to a desert would prolly still be running lightweight 30x9.50s

here in ohio and indianna, however, ground clearance is real important since the trails are mud and dirt and the ruts can be pretty deep. ive only got about a 4" spring lift(i stayed SUA to keep lift to a minimum and CG low) and a 3" body lift. i do really steep hill climbs, tabletop climbs, and alot of off camber stuff, and my rig is very stable. of course, ive got full width chevy axles so im kinda wide, and ive really minimized the sprung weight so im not real top heavy at all.

dont forget another important aspect of of having big tires-airing down. i generally run 5-8 psi so the tires are nice and squishy and grab hold of roots and rocks like a glove.

airing down does lose some under diff clearance, and if you air a 36 down with an unshaved 14 bolt i bet you dont have much more space between it and the ground than a guy with a 44 and an aired up 31!

Thanks for all the input here guys.... been gone for the weekend....

well... some more facts... I DONT TRIM to fit tires... anymore... with the latest W/T mods... I feel that would just defeat the look I just created...

yeah I do have a 3" bodylift that I MUST leave on .... the 33 gal Bronco tank uses the 3" gap to conveniently move the tank up.. so that is not an option to remove...

I LOVED wheeling and with the 14" I did have... she did great for me... flexy and all... better than now by a long shot.. that was with the 4" Skyjacker Softride sytem ( not counting the Revolvers in that statement)

it wont take long at all to drop her 2" and 'see' the difference... I may go for it and do some before and after shots...

Most know.. I went BIG in the beginning JUST TO DO IT cuz at the time.. nobody did it except one for two... one of the originals is Mark "Above the Law" who has NEVER been under a 42" AFAIK.. AND NO TRIMMING.

Now.. with a bit of T&E under my belt...overall useage... from streeter to tweaker... I have to evaluate the current setup...I appreciate all the input... some very good valid points are made across the board.. all of which are taken in for consideration..

again... thank you all for your inputs...

I have a 60 SOA, with 44044's. Now thats only like 2.5" of lift over what the SOA gives me. But if I went stock springs, I would have virtually no down travel b4 my steering parts come in contact with oil pan. I currently have 7" of down travel b4 I hit my stops. I guess you could run tie rod and ram upside down on the hysteer arms, but then you start getting things lower for rocks and such to hit? Oh yea, I run 38.5" boggs, and they are at about 6-8 psi. I hardley ever hit my diffs. Just something to think about, as down travel would be awefully limited if I ran any lower. Dennis

Todd, I know it's going to be hard for you to hear this, but I think it's done. Leave it like it is! You'll have to get another rig to perform your experiments on, that wag is as good as it can get!

Also, you forgot to post a pic of your jeep, all I saw in that one was RBY.

fair enough dude, i see what you're getting at better now I'm serious about the tire size thing though, I don't hit my diff with 35s anymore than I did with 31s, I just go up bigger stuff a little easier

As the only one with your same specs minus tires. I am more comfortable now than before. The width in the axles provides more stability than any of your previous set ups. Sorry to tell you this also but moving from a 36 to 37 isn't going to really help you out. With 39.5's I have about the same clearence under the diffs as before with dana 44's and 37's. It is your descion of cousre but none of these guys are running the setup you are and all though they have good advise it lacks the real world test. I say 39.5's and don't look back.

Everytime I used the word down travel, I meant up travel. But Im sure you figured that out! I was just on pirate, and saw a post where a guy had his bump stops set and had only 2.5" of up travel. Seems that would really suck if your going over huge ruts or rocks. Dennis

What I would do is ditch the AAL setup for -2" height. Then run some of these

http://www.maxxis.com/getImage.asp?FileID=3951

in the 37x14.5/16 variety
Find more info here...

http://www.maxxis.com/automotive/pro...sp?BrandID=223

That will give you more stability if you after it and a larger overall looking tire. You can skip the regear too, which saves several hundred dollars. With all the work you went through putting those WT flares on, I wouldn't trim them either. On that note, you also won't be grinding your fenders on rocks large enough to hit them...so what's the point of going bigger than 36-37" tires? At that point, if you aren't using it to its potential, it becomes a "my thing is bigger than yours" IMO.

An off-roading SUV...always an interesting debate. Your really creating a hibrid mix of looks/function/off-road/on-road.

Just to throw in my .02, I think it needs to be lowered a little to come back into proportion. Your getting the "S" look but losing a good part of the "U" to do it. I guess the good thing is, you always got the "V".

Mike, Good to hear from you! Been wondering where you have been.

That is a good looking tire. Wonder how they will look on a M715... I am getting some Michelin XL's 11.00x16 in about a week or so.
