I have a differnt thread going in the general tech area but you all may have more experience.
I am having a shop replace my ring and pinion gears (pray for me). They tell me I have to go through a break in period before I can go wheeling. Does this sound right? I am not going to do anything 'hard core' but I was planning on taking my truck out this weekend.
500 mile break in.
It is a 'Genuine Gear' set.
opinions?

I have read the article RB posted before and it sounds good. I printed it out and passed it around to my colleagues here at work and we agree it sounds like sound advice. For those of you that don't know, I work in Advanced Engineering at Dana Axle.

Work hardening was the only thing I could think of being an issue since it's either set up correctly or not.

Good advice.
I run 3.31 gears and 31" tires. No towing so not alot of excessive heat.
I have been taking it on short trips and will go on a longer trip today.
So far so good. Thanks for the advice.

GG gear sets are cheap for a reason. I have personally seen three sets let go. They were all set up by repuable shops.... I am a firm believer of you get what you pay for in this sport....

Never heard of them, Elliot. I'm running Percision gears. I know they are pricey but other than Dana or Precision, I wouldn't run anything else Quality counts big time. I have seen the yukon stuff, Precision gear in a yukon box. I believe yukon buys overstock and then resells it under their brand. What is the price they are asking for them? That will usually tell you what the quality is..

Thanks for the info on the GG sets. I honestly didn't know My truck was in getting the locker installed and they found some broken teeth in the stock gears.
We will see what happens. Fortunatly I am not hard core....

I've had quite a few axles regeared. I just picked up the truck and started driving and wheeling. I changed the diff lube every 1,000 miles until 3,000 then every 10,000 after that. My 2 cents. I tend to view it as a plug and play mod.

i just helped my dad install my 4.11 gears in my d44s and we had a fun 2 hours shimming the rear detroit so the back lash was in between 6 and 10thousands and we got it to 8thousands. he smiled at me and said "now its happy" he is an ase certified master tech and has been for about 20 years now. he didn't mention any breakin but did say i made a good choice when spending the extra $ on yukon gears other than the less expensive ones i was thinking about buying.
ps: i paid $1040.00 for 2 4.11 r&p, 2 master install kits(all bearings, seals, shims, nuts and bolts), opern carrier for front and a detroit locker for rear.

I installed Yukon gears in my cherokee when I put in the detroit. Was a back yard install 2 years ago, and is still holdingup fine. I drove 150 miles, then changed the fluid and cleaned out the dif housing inside. Put new fluid in, been fine ever since.
I have also seen many GG go poof, they are made in korea.
Yukoen isnt the best either, they are more in middle. But a good product overall.

When I regeared through a shop in Metro Detroit that Reider Racing refered me to (they are a big drivetrain supplier in MI), those guys said to drive under 55 mph for at least 500 miles with going easy on the skinny pedal, no wheeling, etc. So the gears break in correctly. If I were you, I would let the gears break in like the shop told you, it is pricey to have them installed again. Also, you wouldn't want to mess up the new locker with gear teeth breaking in the future.
