if the engine is really a ford 360,its anyones guess what tranny and transfer case are there without pics.
if its the original drivetrain, the engine is an amc 360,not a ford, and the tranny is a torqueflight 727. transfer case could be a new process 229(full time 4x-front axle will have drive slugs) or a new process 208(part time-front axle will have lockouts). axles will be a dana 44 front, and an amc corporate model 20 in the rear(1 piece shafts, and beefy housing, nothing like the cj version)
you can positively ID the transfer case by looking at the number in the center of the round id tag on the rear.

I am sure the drive train is original I just assumed ford because it says motorcract on the ignition module and it said 360 on a tag near the radiator.
what modern fuel injected engine/trans will bolt up to the xfer case without modifications? the engine is locked up and I am guessing the trans isn't far behind (leaking).. but the xfer case and the rest of the drive train seems good and although the body went to the grave yard I kept the chassis. I would like to make a crawler if I can find a cheap way to put something together.
Thanks for the info!

Ford used a driver drop t-case, so if you find a ford engine/trans/t-case you wont have to swap out front axles. Although you will have to fab mounts for the drive train of course.

Stock for an 84 GW should be an AMC (not Ford) 360, TorqueFlite 727 transmission and a New Process (now New Venture Gear) 229 case.
You are correct, they did use a Ford ignition module, but the motor is AMC. Look at the block "inside" the motor mounts and you'll see "360" cast on the wall. Or, if you're one lucky dog, you'll see "401" cast on the wall. <g>

i personally would look for a 435/205 from a ford, and use whatever engine is in front of it,if you wanna do it quick and chaep.id reccomend not using the 229 xfer case, even if you find an engine and tranny it will bolt to. they have some good points fot a daily driven winter rig that doesnt see abuse, but its not such a good case for a crawler

it all depends, do you want an automatic or do you want a standard trans.
