measure after!!
i got the rancho 5012's for the choptop and they didnt have enough compression and too much droop.i returned them. take the measurement from bolt to bolt and talk to your local 4wheel shop.

Dan's advice is the best you are going to get.
Since all SOA's are custom, and since the amount of height of the springs varies by application, spring age, vehicle weight, etc. The only surefire way is to take some measurements after you get the lift done.
Even assuming you are using stock springs, they could be saggy or you could have built up a higher area for your spring perches than someone else or something that would also affect the shock length you need. Also, are you leaving all the shock mounts stock?
IMHO, if you end up with too much droop and not enough compression, your second option would be to just fab some new shock towers to compensate for it. How hard could that be after all the fab work for the SOA?

I agree and tell everyone the same thing...
'normally' Rancho 5012's are used up ...but wait and measure.... AFTER the SOA

Rancho has an outstanding catalog of their shocks in PDF format, broken down by application or/and sizes and mounting patterns. I've used Rancho's catalog to find the right-sized shock for my intended application (Rover axle under an FSJ), found the stock application for it (in my case, it was '81-87 Blazer with OEM Quad shock front suspension, inner shock) and then went to Monroe's website to find the right part # for that stock application. Kragen just had what I needed.
