I don't drive my Wag much on the streets except for to and from trails, which can include highway trips occasionally. I am about to re-gear, and was wondering if 4.09s are too low for 31" tires. I am eventually going bigger on tire size, but have to live with the 31s for now. Will I be able to drive over 50MPH on the highway, or should I just stick with 3.73s?

Mine does ok with 4.09's and 33's.It will do at least 70mph, and that's with a little 258.It didn't do too bad when I had 31's on it,just a little more rpm's on the hwy.
I would put the 4.09's in if you plan on stepping up tire sizes IMHO.

I put 3.92s with 32's in my 87 and it is fine for highway driving-most of what it gets. The drivetrain is a little noisier but not objectionable. If I were going primarily for off-road performance I'd go up to the 4.56 range.

Thanks for the info...I may go the 4.56 route because of a sale.

You'll be screaming with 4.56s and 31s on the highway.
My CUCV has 4.56's and 32's. I turn about 3000 rpms at 60mph. You would be slightly higher.
Not saying not to do it, but you won't want to take long trips in it.

Yeah, got a case of the bigger, more syndrome for a minute. Think it will be 4.09s now.

I say 4.09 would be fine. No need to go to 4.56 since that would be in the 35+" tire range. I believe that is too big for 5000lb+ rigs w/lockers running 1/2ton gear. I did it for a short time but had to tip toe everywhere.
