A factory J-20 727 TC is low stall out of the box.
Even has a little sticker on it saying so.

you sure you want to do that rob? you will gain some copmression braking ability going downhill, but you will lose the "granny gear feel" of your first gear that you have now.

if i was gonna run an auto,i personally would keep the high stall.

just another tidbit, when i looked into it,a low stall convertor was for some reason not available with a drain plug(very important to me )

okay, since the topic came up....

what's the benefit of a low vs high stall converter?
what's stock for a waggy?
a j20?
what would be 'ideal' for a rock rig?

I was assuming I'd go higher, probably for one of those tow application units for the 727 when I get around to mine towards the new year, but good to find out this info now....

rob, about the only benefit of a low stall is for added compression braking. a factory higher stall is going to let the let the 1st gear feel more "granny like" for lack of a better way to put it. with a low stall, the truck is going to feel like a truck with a hihger 1st gear. in other words, swapping a high stall for a low stall would be similar to swapping a manual tranny with a granny gear for one without.

youll need more grunt from the motor or increases gearing somewhere else to make up for the lack of leverage the high stall adds.

personally,i dont think compression braking is as important as leverage when crawling up and over things,so i would run a high stall. just make sure that you maintain your brakes for creeping downhills

scotty - what would you consider an appropriate stall speed? 700RPM is stock right? or am I way off? do we want to be in the 800RPM range in your opinion or 1200RPM or what?

Thanks man,
Rob

i got no idea. i know that stock amkes the first gear feel roughly double what it is. having wheeled both an auto and granny 4 spd with simiar axle gearing,i know first hand that they feel very similar in low range, and id imagine that a lower stall would make it not feel quite the same. i dont think that youd want it too much hihger, either,as then it would be slipping too much, and the engine would constantly be revved up.

id venture to guess not to vary too much from whatever a stock convertor is,but maybe someone else more into autos(i hate em) would have a better answer than that

By manual vb are you referring to a transgo kit for the valve body?

you can also buy preassembled valve bodies that have manual conversions for $50-$150. Sometimes these are a little better since they're brand new and often have additional features like a true lock and so on....

A low stall speed would be around 1200. The stock converter in my Wag with the tow package is 2200. It gets the engine into its power band to move all that weight.
