I have a 79 Cherokee with a 258 and 3 spd manual trans. What engines will bolt up to that trans? By the way it has to be a six cylinder. Clark County Nevada does not allow engine swaps from six to V8's. If it had a six cylinder then that is what better be in it or it wont pass inspection. I was hoping a Ford 300 I-6 would work Any input would be appreciated. Oh yeah, where can I get a replacement fender flar for the right rear??? Mine is hammered. Thanks

Pretty sure you can do a Chevy 6HEI, seen it done with a 4spd.

Welcome from Boston.

Only the AMC engines match the AMC bellhousing pattern. The largest AMC I6 in the US was the 258 (4.2L). One possibility is to switch from the T15 3-speed to the Tremac T150, which has a Ford pattern. You'd then use the Ford bellhousing with the 300. The T150 came in CJ Jeeps starting in 1976.

It's probably easier to build a stroker engine though. If you combine a 4.0L (242) block with the 258 crank, you can build a 4.6L AMC 6 cyl. The 4.0L has a larger bore than the 258 but a shorter stroke. There are lots of articles on the internet about building AMC strokers.

You might consider building up your 258. Again. lots of articles on the net about this. The 4.0L head will bolt to the 258, giving a significant performance boost. A 258 buildup can be inexpensive compared to a V8 buildup. Check the AM Racing site for a couple of basic articles.

You'd need a Chevy bellhousing adapter. http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_1415.htm

You mean the Chevy 250 I6, Elliot? I've heard the 250 is a good engine, but the 292 is a slug. Not much advantage to the 250 over the 258, I'd think.

On second thought, I'm not sure you can use the T150. The T15 on FSJs has a long input shaft and a spacer, unlike the T150 from the CJ.

Advance Adapters sells a Jeep T15 to Ford V8 adapter which I think will work with the 300 and the FSJ T15.
