Buddy of mine has a 85 or 86 GW with the Selec
Trac. He told me that something in the transfer case went and blew a hole in it, and said he pulled the chain out. I am guessing the chain broke, and may have caused some major damage. From what I have researched I am guessing its a NP228 or 229. Are these hard to find? He mentioned that his uncle usually throws them away and puts a GM T/C in. My friend said he'd give the GW to me but I guess I want to know what I am looking at before hand. TIA.

The 229 is ok till it breaks. Then it gets expensive. I would just put a np208 in it. You'll need a 208 from another FSJ though. A GM 208 is the wrong side drop.

Are the 208s hard to find? Will they bolt right up? Thanks.

There is or was a couple on ebay recently. It's pretty much a bolt up except I think(?) you'll also need the front drive shaft from the donor. Look for a 208 from a 1980 and up Wag, Chero or J-10 truck. The 208's in the J-20's have a different input shaft.

I have a 229 that will be taking out this weekend that I would sell. I haven't had any trouble with it, I just picked-up an 82 J-10 with t176 and np 208 and would just rather have the 208.

If you go with the 208 you will need to get the rear driveshaft. The rear is 5" shorter then the 229. If you plan on driving the on the street in 4wd keep with the 229 (although the parts that break in them are much more expensive then the 208) but if you will be just using the 4wd offroad I would make the change now to the 208.. thats what I did/am doing

How much?
Where in PA are you located? I live in VA and I am always in PA on business in one place or another.

Another question, would a 208 from a Dodge work?
I ran across a website that said a DOdge 208 "would probably" work in a Jeep.

If your search for a good 208 is fruitless or your buddy doesn't want to mess with the trouble of putting a different type of transfer case in, I have a good working 229 from an 89' model GW. I check my email daily, just put TRANSFER CASE in the subject line.
