On an XJ Dana 30 disco axle, it's possible to swap axle shafts from a non-disco version and eliminate the coupling.
Is this the case on a Waggy disco axle also? Can I swap the inner shaft from one without the disco and have a stronger axle?
TIA!

I did that on my '84. You need to install an axle shaft seal inside the pumpkin just outboard of the carrier. This of course necessitates removal of the carrier which means pulling both shafts (L&R). Might as well check wheel bearings, spindle bearings and all seals while your at it. The outer piece of the disco shaft has a huge diameter, 2 or 3 times that of a one piece shaft and therefore has a different type of seal, however, when you check out the stoutness of the disco set-up you may wonder if any strength is gained at all by the replacement. It does allow you to trash the vacuum stuff on the front end though.

it is possible, but i can almost gaurantee you that the 2 piece part of the shaft is not where its going to break. IMO the disco is cool. ive got the one on my XJ rigged to its own vaccum switch, sos i can flip it on and off seperately of the transfer case.

if i could find a full width, pass side drop disco axle of some kind to use in my GW id swap it in in a heartbeat.

the 2 piece shaft is not any weaker, and the prollems most people have with the mechanism itself are more often than not vaccum issues/leaks. the motor itself is vey rarely the prollem.

my $.02 anyway
