My '84 Gw has the Vac. disconnect on the front axle. What is the easiest way to engage it full time and bypass the Vac. system? I had a vac. leak the last time I went rock climbing and had a hell of a time! Also, when I was going to the store the next morning, I did not know I had the vac. leak, and I put it in 4hi and part way to the store, it popped out of 4 hi and would not re-engage in 4 hi or 2hi, only go to 4 lo. I have heard you could damage the vis. coupling by running in 4hi with the front axle disengaged and I was wondering if this is what I did? At the time, I did not know I had the vac. leak. Can I lock the front axle permanently and run in 4lo with the vis. coupling blown out? This vehicle is just for fun and I trailer it when we go out. If I need to put in a new x-case, what is better, replace the 229, get a 228 or I have heard you can put in a 208. If I put in the 228 or 208, I know I would need to put in manual hubs.
Thanks for your help.
