I'm installing a 401 in an 81 J10 and I'm trying to decide wether or not to go with the factory cast exhaust manifolds w/air tubes or go with the edelbrock #6881 headers. My objective is to pass emissions testing if possible. Anyway, for those running headers with a smog pump, any advice such as the best place to buy, how they fit, are they worth the money, etc. would be appreciated.

The Edelbrock system has headers with the AIR tubes welded in place, a Y-pipe, gaskets, bolts, etc., but you have to use an OEM heat riser valve. They're completely smog legal and have a tag welded on the driver side header with the CARB exemption number.
I had them in my 1988 Grand Wag (RIP), later in my 1984 J10 (sold to Dutch). I spent an additional $250 to have all the pieces coated by Jet-Hot.
As for performance, well, you're talking about a good piece of change for a very small performance gain. Headers are most useful in higher-rpm applications.
But they're cool to have!

Thanks Ralph. The Summit price for the headers is $505. Adding another $250 for Jet-Hot coating really brings the price up. I think for now I'll just have to stick with the cast iron exhaust manifolds. But, I do agree that the headers are cool to have!

The exhaust manifolds our trucks have flow very well for stock pieces. Have a look at the smooth bends in the flow path. For street rpms, they work quite well. AMC had good airflow in and out of their engines as compared to the others.

I know some folks who drag race with stock manifolds, and the lack of headers doesn't seem to be a problem. These are street driven cars, and the motors are not real radical. The stock manifolds do flow quite well.

I have the Doug Thorley Tri-Y's and they have the fittings for the factory smog pipes. I have capped them off, but it necessary I can put the pipes on later. I looked at the Edelbrock headers but they weld on the pipes and if something happens you will need to buy new headers.
