Question

Hey guys. I found a 401 engine at a local salvage yard. He says it ran when it was parked years ago and he wants $500 for it. Its not in a Jeep - Its in some sort of AMC car. Is that a good price? I'm thinking about rebuilding it and installing in my 88 GW. Is it a direct replacement with nothing else to modify?

That's reasonable for a 401, if it has not been previously rebuilt, and if it is a good rebuildable engine. That is, no head or block cracks, no thrown rods, etc.

Yes, it's a drop-in for a 360 replacement. The flywheels/flexplates however are different for the different engines, so you may have some issues in that regard.

I say go for it, but that's me. Do more research, and make up your mind by what you discover.

I agree with Al, if it has not been rebuilt before and is still good It's worth $500, might try and talk the guy down a bit though. I'd pull the heads and make sure water didn't get in it and rust the cylinders. Be sure to get everything bolted to the engine, flywheel, pulleys etc. What kind of car? Car might be worth getting also and selling for parts.
