junk yard loving

Went to a junk yard today for the first time. Loved it! I was after one of the backer boards for the headliner. Unfortunately this one will not work. Couple things that I might be able to salvage. Need a windshield, need a front bumper and the brackets that attach to the frame, couple dash knobs.

Anyway guy really needs a plan going into one of these places. Would love to try to find a running engine and put it into a project. God knows after my current build
the funds will be low but the enthusiasm will be high!
Sunroof would be sweet. Here are a couple pics. She was in rough shape.

Congrats on finding one in a wrecking yard. Doesn't happen here.
I would pass on the aftermarket sunroof, really a rainroof.
Someone here was looking for tailgate hinges, and it looks like
that one has the drip rail molding, which is a hot item.

Boneyard trips are always interesting...especially when going to one you haven't been to before. There are all kinds of stories we've all had.....and though it may not seem an issue now, in better weather you'll want to be ware of things like snakes, rodents, and insects (especially things that sting!) when poking around those old vehicles. But that being said....

...most of us make mental notes of what's in what nearby boneyard. Sadly, I know some of the old Jeeps I've seen in yards many years ago I know have gone on to the great metal meltdown factory by now. But still nice to see FSJs in yards these days....at least there are still some parts around to be found maybe.

If you haven't already done so, there's a pretty good search site:

http://www.car-part.com/

You can search for a lot of used parts nationwide. Not all boneyards participate in that service, but there are many that do. Maybe there is something even better within driving distance to you. Worth a quick search at least. If you just want to know if a yard has a FSJ, search for something simple and common...like a door or engine or wheels or something. Then you can see what other parts that vehicle may have. Some places even have some nice pics so you can see what's intact yet.

I tend to agree on the sunroof comment above, but it's your call.

Where is Cochrane? We got snow in northern MN this weekend. Not much sticking by the lake, though....yet.

You are right that it helps to have a plan going in to one of these places. But then...that's what the first trip is for....scouting the situation out! Gotta start somewhere.

Some very cool information thanks for that. Yup that is snow. We have had a couple early dumps.
I live just outside Calgary, Alberta, Canada. No snakes or poison critters here!

I sure enjoyed poking around the junk yard. I'm probably romancing this idea way too much but I would like to pick up a j10 or j20 and do a junk yard swap with a used ls. I feel guilty just thinking about another project. Still so much to do on the current one.

yep, you got the disease when you fantasize about the next project
when you have not completed the current one.

I have done that too......

and I also love junk yards.....

but in todays politically correct climate

we have to say "salvage yards", ...haha

good find
hope you get some good parts.

I'm a junkyard junky too. I almost always hit local wrecking yards when I go on work travel. I keep a running list on my laptop of things I 'need' should I come across a rig. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to a yard, spent a good 30 minutes poking around a specific rig, left the yard, and thought to my self "DANG IT!!! I needed a _____ and it was there!"

Yeah, skip that sunroof. That's a cheap, crappy, aftermarket one and you are asking for regrets.

I can completely relate to that. Though I'm more likely to have seen something, but didn't check for parts that I think of later. Was in a yard I hadn't been in before a few months ago and ran across a J-truck. I think it was a '79 or so. Pretty rough and all. Looked like a V8, auto, etc. Made a mental note it's there, then moved on. There were a few waggies in the yard too, but didn't really look at those. Was there for some parts for a relative's Explorer, so was also focusing on that. Some weeks later I'm thinking "sheesh....I didn't even look to see what shape the tailgate was in on that truck" Not to mention other things that I could have checked for. But I can go back.....it's less than an hour from me. But ones at a distance you do that with, yes, all the more "dang it" moments!

Need to work fast when it comes to junk yards. I went back a few days later
to grab a few things from an old Wagoneer and she had been crushed already bummer. Really wanted the front bumper brackets and bumper.
You can see mine have been cut.

I bet if you put a wanted ad up someone will have them laying around. I had 3 extra sets at one point and sold them for pennies.
