It's the module for the later Ford TFI distributor, which put the module on top of the engine, next to the distributor? Duraspark II? Something like that. Maybe with spark control from the EFI?
Yep, that looks right. Here's the Megamanual page about it - http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/TFI.htm - According to this, it's Hall effect, not VR, so it won't work with your distributor.

I don't know, how bout "a hundered dollars worth of parts that won't change the way your car runs upgrade"
or "An ignition tune up with different parts"
If you swap out all these parts and your rig runs better, it would have run better with the stock replacment parts.
I personally have no issue with the stock duraspark system, other than its untidy and in my experience more failure prone. YMMV.

Haha! Somedays I get tired of the same old TFI vs HEI debate, but I'm about to start maintenance on my Burb and I'm procrastinating.
What is often called the "TFI Upgrade" I just call the TFI cap and coil mod. It is a minor upgrade though, but largely a pointless one without a true high energy upgrade to go with it. The larger cap puts the terminals further away so there is less cross arcing when using a high voltage coil and/or multispark controllers.
Also there are the male terminals on the cap giving you a positive engagement with the wires, the boots won't try to pull the contactor inside of them up and out of the terminal.
For me the deciding factor between HEI and TFI was price. HEI comes in two flavors, cheap Chinese junk and $300 name brand. For $300 I was able to do name brand TFI as well as an MSD box to replace the Duraspark controller. If one feels that a stock HEI controller (module) is better than multispark capacitive discharge, well, then HEI would be the way to go.
For me the MSD/TFI parts are paying off in spades, as I've recently learned I have a 304, so my engine is going to be spending a lot more time in higher RPMs making up for it's lack of in^3.

Well, I agree that, in most cases, the perceived improvement could largely come from new parts and a coincident tuneup.
But there are real advantages to the big cap and stuff. Both Ford and GM must have thought the big cap was advantageous, since they both supplied a big cap as standard equipment when Duraspark was current. And the EI coil is a hotter coil. And the posts on the big cap are a much better connector than the older cups.
I wonder if the big cap was even available to AMC - maybe Ford wanted to keep it for their own cars. It is distinctive.
It's funny that you link to a junkyardgenius/jeephammer/teamrush page - he's rabidly anti-HEI, if you look at his other pages. http://junkyardgenius.com/ignition/jeep/HEIcompair.html
Also, I'm running the "stealth HEI" on my CJ-6 -
- the HEI module is in the black project box and heat sink on the fender. Works well. This Jeep was originally equipped with the problematic Prestolite ignition.

Yeah, I really like the post connectors. A very positive connection, and they've got to be more waterproof.

Here is the finished product on my 91:
http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showt...ht=tfi+install
I did not even mess with the durraspark module, just cut the coil wires and soldered in the TFI adaptor. I am probably going to transfer all off the fancy stuff to my next wagon, and put the 91 back to stock. Ill try the stealth HEI because I dont want to waste my OEM durraspark modules.
