starter interchange

i found the starter power stud stripped on my 78 wagoneer when i went to change the cable out. when i was looking around online 3 places had pics of the starters and they all looked the same, but my starter looked different. so i was poking around evilbay for some other stuff and saw a starter for a 73 model and it looked like mine i then searched for a 77 starter and it looks like the one i have. whats the difference, is one better than the other? can i use either one? my 78 has a 360 and turbo 400.

You can get a rethreading kit and extend the stud

what is this rethreading kit and where do you get it? the starter worked fine.

im tempted to braze the stud and rethread it. there was a little mor ethread on the end so i added an extra lockwasher, it stripped that right off. real soft. nothing like the copper threads on the solenoid studs.

AFAIK the starter is the same on the 360 and 401 regardless of which auto transmission you have until they changed to the Mitsubishi starter in '88. Despite being a "Ford" starter in appearance, you cannot use a starter from any Ford. The AMC nosecone is a different lenght.

so the nose is the same on the 77 and earlier vs the 78 and later? somewhere around there is the change. the motor end of the cumutator end of the starter is different. the newer one looks better to me, the way the cable attaches to it.

The repair stud was designed for Ford starters. Since I don't work in a parts shop now, I can't access the part #
